Those of you who are hot on the South American wine trend will agree when I say Argentina is producting some pretty damn good bargain wines theses days. I’ll go into some of the other South American wines another time, but for now, behold the very lovely Malbec.
Malbec is a dark varietal (not a region) that grows in many parts of the world, but many of the Malbecs you’ll see on restaurant and bar wine lists are from the Mendoza region of Argentina. It’s often used in blended wines as well.
Though young Malbecs can exemplify the characteristics of any young wine (alcoholic, tart, etc.), some of the more well-made ones can be, in the words of a good friend, “face-melting.”
Though the Trapiche Oak Cask Malbec is far from face-melting, it’s another great wine to bring to someone’s house. It brings hints of black cherry and tobacco, and a smoother-than-anticipated finish. Some time in the decanter rounds it out nicely.
This wine would be pretty versatile in the pairing department, but I’d recommend hooking it up with a juicy, bloody steak.
