First of all, Kim Crawford is a dude. Just to let you know. I’ve heard a few folks talk about Kim Crawford as a “she-vintner” (not in those exact words, but you get the idea) and it makes me cringe almost as much as hearing someone refer to Led Zeppelin as a person. DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE ASSIGNING PRONOUNS, PEOPLE!
But I digress. This. Wine. Is. A. May. Zing, with an emphasis on the zing. To be perfectly honest, not everyone’s palate can handle the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. It’s zingy. It’s in your face. It is TART. But Kim Crawford expresses it beautifully. Picture a ruby red grapefruit, only bottled, and buzz inducing. I actually uttered the first line of Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18 the first time I tasted this wine. (“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou are more lovely and more temperate…”) It is truly a summer’s day in a bottle.
Another thing to note: Crawford wines tend to be on the pricier end for a yuppie budget, usually in the low $20s, but I have always gotten a really good deal on them at Safeway.
Like the others, this wine holds up wonderfully on its own, but really brings out the best in many a summery dish. I introduced Alison to the Gospel of Crawford when we made orzo the other night (will link to blog entry), and they worked really well together (the orzo and the wine, but actually, Alison and the wine were quite compatible, too).
