My first instinct when picking wines for the summer urged me to gravitate towards Sauvignon Blancs from all over the world: New Zealand (which produces one of my favorites, the holy Kim Crawford Marlborough SB), Chile, Bordeaux, California.

Since I was already focusing on Chablis, I thought I’d continue in the French vein with a Sancerre. Also, it just happens to be my best friends’ favorite wine. Since she’s spending the entire summer studying for the bar, I thought I’d take a few for a test drive so I could find the perfect bottle to bring her come celebration time.

I tested this Sancerre on my roommate, who tends to like California Sauvignon Blancs. I was curious to see how she’d react. About two minutes later, when she still had her nose in the glass, I heard … “Oh wow… it smells soooo good. Wow. WOW.” She wound up loving it, as did I. This Sancerre was much grassier than many other French expressions of the Sauvignon Blanc grape, carrying hints of pear, green apple, lemon and chalk, with a subtle but long finish.
