I first discovered Muscadet on a disgustingly hot DC summer evening (coincidentally while grocery shopping with Ms. McConnell). While perusing the wine selection at Whole Foods, my eye fell upon a very reasonably-priced French white. I’d never tried a Muscadet before, but for $8.99 a bottle, I thought, why not?

We took it home, chilled it, and sipped it with a caprese salad. It was simple, dry, and refreshing—and so began my love affair with Muscadet.

Muscadet actually accounts for much of the white wine from the Loire Valley, but one of the more popular appellations is Sevre et Maine. It is typically dry, briny, and citrusy, as this one was, and much brighter than its more mineral-y counterparts.

Since my first bottle of Muscadet, I’ve served the same wine at two wine tastings and most recently treated myself to a glass with a simple pasta dish, and it remains a wonderful go-to choice for a simple, cheap, drinkable, and likeable white wine — perfect for any occasion, and a great choice for a dinner party.
