Say hi to harissa! If you're not already spooning this spicy pepper sauce over everything, maybe this should be the year you start. Harissa's not only totally crazed with flavor, it also combines several of the most healthful ingredients on the planet -- olive oil, chile peppers, and garlic.

What is harissa?

Harissa is a spicy condiment, a chile paste made with a blend of chile peppers that is a common ingredient in the cuisines of North African and the Middle East. Along with olive oil and garlic, chile peppers, often smoked peppers, are combined with various spices like coriander and cumin, tomatoes, and sometimes mint.

It's a staple of Tunisian and Algerian cooking. And these days, you can find prepared harissa in grocery stores. But for the DIYers, here's a tasty, spicy homemade harissa recipe. Be warned: You will want to spoon this sauce over any foodstuff that is not ice cream or cake!

We have to agree with Chef John: "A small spoonful of this makes virtually any savory dish better."
