Getting Closer to Your Winemaker

More and more Americans are thinking locally & regionally when it comes to their food choices, but what about the wine they sip? If you lack the funds to hop a flight and meet your Burgundy producer, the next best thing is a visit to brand-new, tiny Ansonia Wines in DC.

Ansonia’s retail location grew out of a family-run importing business that has supplied wine to big-name DC restaurants such as Komi, Citronelle, CityZen, Obelisk, and Central.

The shop focuses on Burgundy but also has some nice names from the Alsace, the Rhone, Bordeaux, and Italy. You won’t find row after row of dusty bottles, either — only lots of blonde wood, gorgeous lighting, and carefully chosen wines from producers the Wilcox family have met personally.

We think that people enjoy their wine a little more when they know something about who made it and where it came from,” says owner Thomas Wilcox. “In our store you’ll find books, maps, and photographs with our producers, all designed to bring our customers closer to the producers that make their wine.”

To see what Ansonia is pouring daily, visit the blog or follow on Twitter. The owners are planning an open house for December 12, 10:00am - 9:00pm.
