Rock Art Ridge Runner
The Nitty Gritty:
- Brewery: Rock Art
- Type: Ale
- Style: Barleywine
- Country: United States
- Price: About $1
- Rating: 90/100
- Tags: vermont
Rock Art, the Morrisville Vermont brewery, does not have the distribution network of Magic Hat or Harpoon. That does not make it any less of a beer! Their marquee beer, the Ridge Runner, is called a “mild barleywine” by the brewery, but even a mild version of this notoriously big style clocks in at 7.2% ABV. It is a very complex beer, displaying chocolate, caramel, and malty undertones and a pleasant hops bitterness. The thing that strikes me, though, is how smooth it all goes down, belying the alcohol content.
If you can get your hands on a bottle of this beer, please do, but watch out: as Rock Art’s Web site says, “Hold on to your hat, ‘cause you’ll lose your feet on this one!”

A Vermonter at heart, his favorite breweries are Rock Art and Long Trail. He is currently brewing a 9.5% ABV 95 IBU Spring IPA which he hopes will be potable (please see future columns to understand the acronyms, and whether it is in fact potable).
