Lagunitas, a brewery in Petaluma, Calif., is a barrier-breaker with many fine beers. The Dogtown Pale Ale is one of their more conventional brews, with a refreshing citrus hoppiness and a slight sweetness not always found in an American Pale Ale. It’s a good pick for someone who likes good hoppy bitterness but doesn’t necessarily want a highly alcoholic IPA on a hot summer day.

A Vermonter at heart, his favorite breweries are Rock Art and Long Trail. He is currently brewing a 9.5% ABV 95 IBU Spring IPA which he hopes will be potable (please see future columns to understand the acronyms, and whether it is in fact potable).
