Equihops

The Nitty Gritty:

  • Brewery: CSK/Falcon Brewers
  • Type: Ale
  • Style: Double IPA
  • Country: United States
  • Price: About $1
  • Rating: 83/100
  • Tags: homebrew hops IPA

I named my double IPA “Equihops” for three reasons: one, it sounded kind of cool; two, it debuted on the Vernal equinox (my birthday); and three, it was “equally hopped” in a way. I used six ounces of hops of three varieties — Warrior, Amarillo, and Simcoe — and added a blend of them every minute or so during the boil to balance the bitterness and aromas of each variety (Dogfish Head does this for its 60-, 90-, and 120-Minute IPAs, though the hops are constantly added throughout the boil).

The result? A dark amber beer displaying balanced, full hop flavor, caramel sweetness, and a nice bitterness in the aftertaste. This beer has an incredibly low distribution, but if you’re ever in the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood of D.C., give me a call and I’ll see what I can do.
